Beware of Free Solitaire Applications

Solitaire is one of the most enduring computer games that computer users across the globe enjoy playing. While Windows includes a free solitaire game, hardcore game lovers may instead choose to install additional freeware applications that offer free solitaire options. Unfortunately, many of these freeware applications are filled with adware software that can infect the machine with unwanted advertisements and pop-ups that are incredibly difficult to eradicate.

Midnight Oil solitaire is one such example of a program that displays intrusive advertisements. This is a freeware program available to those using Windows operating systems. Many computer users are enticed by the different features available, in turn installing the software on their computer, only to discover that their machine is then plagued with unwanted ads. This particular program uses the AdSoftware system to display advertisements whenever the computer is connected to the Internet.

Midnight Oil is only one of the many free solitaire programs that displays unwanted advertisements on Windows machines. Isolitaire and Aces and Kings solitaire are two additional examples that display ads whenever connected to the Internet. While some may find the ability to play solitaire for free to be an acceptable trade off for the advertisements displayed, other computer users will likely be frustrated with the massive amount of ads displayed on the computer.

Fortunately, these programs generally must be installed by the user, meaning they won’t attempt to install themselves on their own. This means that computer users need to stay up to date on the latest information available regarding adware and spyware programs. If the software has already been installed on the machine, there are several different steps that should be followed to remove all traces of the offending application.

The first step is to check whether or not there is an option to uninstall the software in the computer’s control panel. Some adware programs may provide this option, but many others won’t. If you discover that the application can be removed in this manner, you will still want to sweep your entire system with an antivirus program. This will guarantee that the adware did not leave behind any code intended to continue tracking your movements.

If the application does not provide an uninstall option, your best bet is to use your antivirus program to remove the program in its entirety. Not only will this delete the application from your machine, but it will also sever any ties that could remain in the registry of the machine. Antivirus protection options are available from a variety of different companies and vary widely in price.

As a general rule, any freeware being considered for installation on a computer should be thoroughly vetted before being downloaded. Only download programs from reputable download sources, and refrain from installing software from independent developers unless the identity of the developer can be verified. All downloads should also be scanned with antivirus software before being opened, in order to keep the machine safe from unwanted intrusion and keep all of your personal data safe.
